What time zone is Turkey in?

Turkey runs on Turkey Time (TRT), fixed at UTC+3 with no seasonal clock changes. In summer that puts it level with Eastern European Summer Time (EEST). In winter it sits one hour ahead of Eastern European Time (EET).

In January 2026, when Central Europe is on CET (UTC+1), Turkey is two hours ahead. In July, when most of Europe moves to CEST (UTC+2), the gap shrinks to one hour.

Why Turkey stopped changing its clocks

Turkey locked the clocks to UTC+3 in September 2016. Before that, the country cycled between Eastern European Time (EET, UTC+2) in winter and Eastern European Summer Time (EEST, UTC+3) in summer. The government cited energy savings and better alignment with daily routines.

The switch was immediate. Clocks went forward to UTC+3 in March 2016 as usual. They never went back in October. Turkey has stayed on UTC+3 ever since.

How TRT compares to EET, EEST and MSK

Turkey Time occupies a fixed spot while neighbouring zones shift around it twice a year.

  • Winter (October to March): Turkey is one hour ahead of EET (UTC+2) countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and Greece. It is two hours ahead of CET (UTC+1) countries including Germany and France.
  • Summer (March to October): Turkey matches EEST (UTC+3) countries such as Greece and Finland. It is one hour ahead of CEST (UTC+2) countries.
  • Year-round: Turkey aligns with Moscow Time (MSK, UTC+3). Both countries stay on the same clock all year.
Period Turkey (TRT) vs. Example country
Winter (January) CET (UTC+1) Germany: 2 hours behind Turkey
Winter (January) EET (UTC+2) Greece: 1 hour behind Turkey
Summer (July) CEST (UTC+2) France: 1 hour behind Turkey
Summer (July) EEST (UTC+3) Finland: same time
Year-round MSK (UTC+3) Russia: same time

How does the Turkey time zone affect calls and flights with Europe?

The two-hour winter gap causes more friction than the one-hour summer offset.

A 10:00 meeting in Istanbul in winter is 08:00 in London and 09:00 in Paris. That pushes European morning calls later. In summer the same 10:00 Istanbul meeting is 09:00 in London and 10:00 in Paris, a tighter overlap.

Airlines publish departure and arrival times in local time. A flight leaving Istanbul at 14:00 TRT lands in Berlin at 15:00 CET in winter and 15:00 CEST in summer. The clock difference changes. The flight duration does not.

Northern Cyprus follows Turkey Time

Northern Cyprus uses Turkey Time (UTC+3) year-round. The Republic of Cyprus, governing the south, observes EET (UTC+2) in winter and EEST (UTC+3) in summer.

The island splits by the clock from October to March, when the north runs one hour ahead of the south. From March to October both sides sit on the same time (UTC+3).

The IANA time zone database records the north as Asia/Famagusta. The south uses Asia/Nicosia.

Will Turkey ever bring back daylight saving?

No sign of it. As of 2026, Turkey remains on permanent UTC+3. The European Union’s proposal to end seasonal clock changes has been stalled in the Council since 2019. If it ever passes, Turkey’s fixed offset would match a "permanent summer time" choice from Eastern European member states.

For anyone scheduling across the border, the rule is simple: Turkey is always UTC+3. Same as Greece in summer. One hour ahead in winter.
