The gap is constant year-round
Germany adopted CET (UTC+1) in 1893. France aligned its clocks with Greenwich in 1911, then moved to CET during the 1940 occupation and never switched back. Today the UK runs on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0) in winter and British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) in summer.
Because both the UK and the continent move their clocks forward and back on the same weekends, the one-hour difference stays the same all year:
| Season | UK Time | Central Europe Time | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter (standard) | GMT (UTC+0) | CET (UTC+1) | UK is 1 hour behind |
| Summer (DST) | BST (UTC+1) | CEST (UTC+2) | UK is 1 hour behind |
When it is 10:00 in London, it is 11:00 in Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, and Warsaw. Every day of the year.
Which countries share the UK's time zone?
The UK is not alone. Two other countries use Western European Time (WET, UTC+0) in winter and Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+1) in summer:
- Portugal (mainland and Madeira; the Azores are one hour behind at UTC-1/UTC+0)
- Ireland (uses IST, Irish Standard Time, which matches BST)
The Faroe Islands and the Canary Islands also use WET/WEST, putting them on UK time year-round.
Iceland uses UTC+0 all year with no summer time. It matches the UK in winter but sits one hour behind the UK in summer.
Why the UK never adopted CET
The UK considered switching several times. A 1968-1971 experiment called British Standard Time kept the UK at UTC+1 all year. The experiment ended after complaints from northern Scotland, where winter mornings stayed dark.
The UK government reviewed the idea again in the 1990s and 2000s but never adopted it. The current arrangement keeps the UK on its historical solar time with Greenwich as the prime meridian.
Spain, by contrast, switched to CET in 1940 under Franco and never changed back. Geographically, Spain belongs in the UK's time zone. Read more about why Spain is in the wrong time zone.
Is the one-hour gap a problem for business?
Calls and meetings. The best window for calls between the UK and the continent is 09:00-16:00 UK time (10:00-17:00 CET). Avoid scheduling UK meetings at 08:00 if your colleagues in CET countries start at 09:00. They are already an hour into their day.
Travel. A flight from London to Paris departing at 14:00 UK time arrives at 16:00 local time in Paris. The reverse: a 15:00 departure from Paris lands at 14:00 UK time.
Stock exchanges. The London Stock Exchange opens at 08:00 UK time. Frankfurt and Euronext exchanges open at 09:00 CET, which is 08:00 UK time. The trading overlap is complete.
Who should do something different. If you live in Scotland, northern England, or Northern Ireland and frequently call the continent, do not assume your 09:00 start is standard. Your contacts in CET countries have already been working for an hour. The common advice to "add one hour for CET" is wrong for you. Set your world clock to CET as your primary reference, not the other way around.
Why is the UK one hour behind France when they are so close?
France sits in the same solar time zone as the UK. But France adopted CET during the German occupation in 1940 and kept it after the war. The UK stayed on its historical time based on the Greenwich meridian.
Does the UK change clocks on the same day as the rest of Europe?
Yes. Both the UK and EU countries change clocks on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. The switch happens at 01:00 UTC. That is 02:00 in the UK when on BST and 03:00 in CET countries when on CEST.
Is Ireland on the same time as the UK?
Yes. Ireland uses Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+1) in summer and GMT (UTC+0) in winter. The clocks change on the exact same days as the UK.
What time zone does Portugal use?
Mainland Portugal and Madeira use Western European Time (WET, UTC+0) in winter and Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+1) in summer, matching the UK. The Azores are one hour behind at UTC-1/UTC+0.
Does the UK have a different time zone than the rest of Europe in summer?
No. In summer, the UK uses BST (UTC+1) and CET countries use CEST (UTC+2). The one-hour gap remains the same. The UK is never on the same time as CET countries.
Why doesn't the UK just switch to CET?
The UK government has debated it but never implemented it. The 1968-1971 experiment with permanent summer time was unpopular in northern Scotland, where winter mornings stayed dark.
