London Stock Exchange: 08:00-16:30 GMT/BST
The main UK equity market runs a continuous electronic auction from 08:00 to 16:30 local time.
- Winter (GMT, UTC+0): 08:00-16:30 GMT.
- Summer (BST, UTC+1): 08:00-16:30 BST.
The exchange observes British Summer Time. Clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March (in 2026: 29 March) and back on the last Sunday of October (in 2026: 25 October). During BST, London is one hour ahead of GMT, which matters when you compare it to continental exchanges on Central European Time.
No late afternoon extension. No weekend trading.
Euronext: 09:00-17:30 CET/CEST
Euronext operates cash equity and derivatives markets across Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, and Dublin. All venues use the same trading day: 09:00 to 17:30 local time.
- Winter (CET, UTC+1): 09:00-17:30 CET.
- Summer (CEST, UTC+2): 09:00-17:30 CEST.
Dublin sits in the same zone as London (GMT/BST). Euronext’s Dublin session therefore runs 09:00-17:30 GMT/BST, one hour behind the continental session. In winter, Dublin opens at 09:00 GMT while Paris opens at 09:00 CET (10:00 GMT). In summer, Dublin opens at 09:00 BST while Paris opens at 09:00 CEST (08:00 BST).
Deutsche Börse Frankfurt: 09:00-17:30 CET/CEST
Deutsche Börse, based in Frankfurt, operates the Xetra electronic trading platform. Its hours match Euronext’s continental session: 09:00 to 17:30 local time.
- Winter (CET, UTC+1): 09:00-17:30 CET.
- Summer (CEST, UTC+2): 09:00-17:30 CEST.
Frankfurt follows Germany’s single time zone (Europe/Berlin, CET/CEST). No Dublin-style anomaly. No lunch break. No late session.
Moscow Exchange: 10:00-18:45 MSK
The Moscow Exchange (MOEX) trades from 10:00 to 18:45 Moscow Standard Time (MSK, UTC+3). Russia does not observe daylight saving time.
- Year-round: 10:00-18:45 MSK.
That means Moscow’s open is 10:00 MSK = 07:00 GMT in winter, 06:00 BST in summer. Its close is 18:45 MSK = 15:45 GMT in winter, 14:45 BST in summer. The shared window with London (08:00-16:30 GMT/BST) is roughly 08:00-15:45 GMT winter / 08:00-14:45 BST summer.
When London and continental trading sessions coincide
The critical window for anyone trading across London, Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam:
Winter (GMT + CET): - London closes at 16:30 GMT. - Frankfurt/Paris close at 17:30 CET (16:30 GMT). - Full shared window: 08:00-16:30 GMT (09:00-17:30 CET).
Summer (BST + CEST): - London closes at 16:30 BST. - Frankfurt/Paris close at 17:30 CEST (16:30 BST). - Full shared window: 08:00-16:30 BST (09:00-17:30 CEST).
In both seasons, the shared window lasts exactly 8 hours 30 minutes. But the local time at which London closes shifts relative to continental clocks. In winter, 16:30 GMT is 17:30 CET. In summer, 16:30 BST is 15:30 CEST: Frankfurt and Paris close one hour later in their own local time.
How DST shifts trading hours for international traders
DST creates three practical problems for traders outside Europe.
1. The March gap. Europe moves to summer time on the last Sunday of March. The US moved to summer time on the second Sunday of March. For two to three weeks, the time difference between New York and London shrinks by one hour. A trader in New York used to a 5-hour gap to London (EST 10:00 = GMT 15:00) suddenly has a 4-hour gap (EDT 10:00 = BST 15:00). The same applies to Frankfurt and Paris.
2. The October gap. Europe moves back to winter time on the last Sunday of October. The US moves back on the first Sunday of November. For one week, the gap widens by one hour.
3. The London, Moscow mismatch. Moscow does not observe DST. The time difference between London and Moscow changes twice a year. Winter: Moscow = GMT+3 (London 08:00 = Moscow 11:00). Summer: Moscow = BST+2 (London 08:00 = Moscow 10:00). The shared window shifts.
